In the past we have talked a lot about Project OpenHand-Columbus (POHC) and have spent time and money donating to the cause, but what is this program of LifeCare Alliance and where is you money going? As a League we have decided to focus our efforts on the program with the greatest impact on the LGBT+ community, Project OpenHand-Columbus.
Project OpenHand, a program of LifeCare Alliance, serves clients across Central Ohio affected by HIV/AIDS. The pantry was founded in 1994 by Matt Taylor, who later passed away due to complications from HIV. His parents then ran the pantry until the program was brought into LifeCare Alliance in 2004. Today, we continue Matt Taylor’s vision of showing compassion for those affected by HIV/AIDS. At Project OpenHand, we strive to interrupt the cycle of chronic infection and malnutrition by providing “food as medicine.” Our services include a private food pantry, home-delivered meals, nutrition counseling, and congregate dining services through Carrie’s Café. With all of these services housed in one location, we can meet the client where they are and help them to improve their health and battle their illness.
